Kosovo stalemate set to open rift between Russia and the West - by Anne Penketh

The European Union is about to move into uncharted waters, facing a major test of its credibility over the existence of a state only 30 miles from its border, as Kosovo prepares to declare its independence from Serbia. International mediators, who have just completed a final and fruitless attempt to secure a negotiated agreement between Belgrade and Pristina on independence, are putting together a report to the UN secretary general. Their findings will trigger the endgame of a diplomatic dance that began in 1999 when Kosovo was placed under UN administration, laying the groundwork for eventual independence. The UN moved in after an 11-week Nato bombing campaign put an end to Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown against the ethnic Albanian majority in the province which the Serbs see as the cradle of their culture.

Russia and others like serbia,

Russia must be more realistic, because Kosova has diferent history from others cases around the world.Briefly, In 1913 kosova was occupied by serbian in line with support from other powers country in that time.During deferent period the albanian were maltreate, jailed, killed you know why? only for the reason that they were Albanian. And recently we are all witneses what happen during the war 1998/99, 150.000 houses were put fire(burn, destroyed), over 1.000.000 people were deportation through Macedonia and albania, many of women were violate( infringe), a lot of men were tying for electricyty line after that wre put oil on them and burn them and a lot other things that I have not seen. For all these reason NATO had interier to save 2 milion people from liquidation by wild serbian state. so Russia you mean that albanian can live under the same roof with serbia , never forget that and be more realistic, otherwise you show to all cilivise world that you wild and same as serbian.
Faithfully
Ibrahim RRUSTEMI, PRISTINA ,KOSOVA

I do not see a reason to give independence to Kosovo.
Kosovo was always part of Serbia, never a state, but just a region within Serbia.
When not part of Serbia, Ksovo was part of the Ottoman Empire (as well as the whole region of the Balkans) and part of greater Albanian Nazi state.
Even the name Kosovo is Serbian and meaningless in Albanian.

The only argument is that Albanians make more than 90% of the population.
Id does not metter that during the Tito’s communist regime, Albanian population grew from 50% to 90%?
Half of all Albanians today in Kosovo are children of those who escaped from Enver Hodza’s regime.
How many regions in the world should than have the same right?
Albanians also treat with the violence if they do not gain independence.
Genocide?

So we can not talk about the genocide in Kosovo.
Can we justify Srebrenica, Republika Srpska and Krayina with almost 1 million Serbs killed by the NAZI Croats and Muslims during the ww2?
In both world wars and during the cold war, Serbes where allies.
What about Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia?
Croatia was militarily backed up to expel all of the Serbs form Croatia. Serbs where 90% of the Krajina population.
Serbs where forced to accept the government and internal borders of the former Yu republics.
SO why do not we expect the same from the Albanias?
International law, history and moral values scream: Kosovo is part of Serbia. And that's the way how it should stay.
