EU Commissioner Nelie Kroes rejects harsh US criticism of Microsoft ruling
The European Commissioner for Competition Nelie Kroes has rejected the US government's criticism of the judgment the EU court issued against Microsoft on Monday. According to media reports she has called the reservations expressed by Thomas O. Barnett, the Assistant Attorney General of the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice, "totally unacceptable." It was inappropriate for an employee of the US government to criticize an independent court outside his or her area of responsibility, the Commissioner is reported to have said. The EU Commission did not comment on the administration of justice in the United States and expected the US government to behave in a similar fashion, she added.
Comment EU-Digest: Mrs. Kroes is absolutely right. US jurisdiction does not cover Europe and it's totally unacceptable for an employee of the US government to criticize an independent court in the EU.
