France gets first Muslim minister - by Susan Bell
Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, sent out a powerful message to the country's five million Muslims yesterday by appointing Ms Dati - whose family roots are in North Africa - to the senior cabinet post of Justice Minister. It is the first time a French Muslim has held a top government job.
Mr Sarkozy fulfilled a campaign pledge to improve the political gender balance by naming seven women in his 15-member cabinet, headed by François Fillon, the prime minister.
